Dying Sun-like stars may be more chaotic than we thought. A new model from Caltech theoretical astrophysicist Jim Fuller suggests that the transformation of these stars into white dwarfs is far from orderly. Instead, it's a wild ride with thousands of tiny kicks. These kicks come from uneven bursts of material escaping from the star's surface, causing it to move in random directions. This process is like a chaotic coin flip, where each flip is a burst of material, and the star moves a bit in the opposite direction. Over time, these tiny kicks add up, resulting in a significant overall shift in the star's motion. This discovery could explain why some binary stars break apart and why certain stellar collisions might occur, providing a new way to understand the final stages of Sun-like stars.
