Crypto CEO Sentenced to 20 Years for $200M Bitcoin Ponzi Scheme: Full Story (2026)

A shocking 20-year prison sentence has been handed down to a crypto CEO for orchestrating a massive $200 million Ponzi scheme. This case, involving tens of thousands of investors, is a stark reminder of the risks in the crypto world.

Ramil Ventura Palafox, a dual US-Philippine citizen, was found guilty of wire fraud and money laundering. He promised daily returns of up to 3% from Bitcoin trading, but it was all a lie.

Investors, lured by the promise of consistent profits, poured over $201 million into Palafox's company, Praetorian Group International (PGI), between 2019 and 2021. This included a significant amount of Bitcoin, valued at around $171.5 million. The reality, however, was a classic Ponzi scheme, with new investor funds being used to pay off earlier participants, resulting in losses of at least $62.7 million for victims.

But here's where it gets controversial... Palafox's lavish spending. He used millions of investor funds for personal expenses, including luxury vehicles, high-end homes, and penthouse suites. Authorities also found that he transferred significant amounts, including $800,000 and 100 BTC, to a family member.

The scheme began to unravel as regulators dug deeper into PGI's operations. In 2025, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil complaint, alleging that Palafox misrepresented PGI's trading activity and used a multilevel marketing structure to recruit new members. Federal prosecutors later charged him with wire fraud and money laundering.

And this is the part most people miss: the international reach of this scheme. PGI's website was seized in 2021, and related operations were shut down in the UK, indicating a global enforcement effort.

The DOJ has offered some hope to victims, stating they may be eligible for restitution.

This case serves as a stark warning to investors and a reminder of the importance of due diligence in the crypto space.

What are your thoughts on this crypto Ponzi scheme? Do you think the sentence is fair, or is there more to discuss? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
